Deaf Camp A Success!

Ninety-two happy campers enjoyed a great week of fun, outdoor activities, crafts and visiting Hanging Rock State Park. Kudos go to summer program director Robert Banks and 4-H for planning an excellent program for the campers. A big thank you to Michael Hoffman for his six years of dedication and service as deaf camp program coordinator.

None of this would have been possible without the continued support of the Sertoma Clubs in North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. Be on the lookout for pictures from camp and a video showing all the fun the campers enjoyed.

Hearing Charities of America

For half a century, Sertoma has had speech and hearing as a mission focus. Those efforts include a twofold scholarship program, one for the deaf and hard of hearing and one for those who are in the hearing health profession, the Adopt-An-Agency program and our national education program, SAFEEars!. To expand Sertoma’s mission and brand as the premier hearing health service organization, Hearing Charities of America (HCOA) was formed. This new not-for-profit arm will allow the mission to flow into areas where Sertoma has no presence and to develop new tools and relationships for Sertoma and its clubs.

Work Weekend 2010

We had a great work weekend. There was a small group of dedicated folks and lots of work was accomplished. A team led by Ed Bridger and George Kampscroeder put the bunkbeds together in 3 cabins. The 4-H staff: Rob, Jared, Rodney & Susan delivered the mattresses. Don Welch single handedly powerwashed the entire pool. He says he wants to share the job next year! Nancy Voiland, John Kelly and Janis Henderson-Hunsucker removed the leaves out of the pool and used the leaf blower and rakes to remove the leaves from the pool deck. The 4-H staff and John Kelly painted the fence by the gate and maintanence shed. Lisa Lloyd and crew cooked great meals because we sure worked up an appetite! Mike Bowman (property mananger) and Keith Russell (Center Director) provided us with directions and tools.

Janis is selling Bluegrass Festival Tickets to benefit Deaf Camp

Janis Henderson-Hunsucker is selling tickets for The Foothills Hayride at Jomeokee Campground at Pinnacle. This event, celebrating Stokes County’s rich musical heritage, will be held Friday, May 14th (music beginning at 3:00 p.m.) and Saturday, May 15th (music beginning at 11:00 a.m.) Advance tickets are $20 for the two day event (offer good until April 30, 2010). For each ticket sold, the Camp Club will receive $10. After April 30th, tickets are $20 per day of the event and will be available only from the Stokes County Arts Council. Featuring performances by John Cowan, Steep Canyon Rangers, Grasstowne, Junior Sisk and Rambler’s Choice, Rich in Tradition and more. All Sertomans, their families and friends are welcome to participate in the annual Spring Sertoma Work Weekend on April 9-11, 2009 at the Sertoma/4-H Educational Center, Westfield, N,.C. . Come for the day on Saturday, May 10, or to come as early as Friday evening and stay through Sunday ‘whenever.”:

Friday, April 9
Arrival as your schedule permits
7:00 p.m. – Dinner & Social Time
Saturday, April 10
8:00 a.m. – Breakfast
8:30 a.m. – Meeting of the Camp Sertoma Club
or Work on projects
12:00 p.m. – Lunch
Work on projects
6:30 p.m. – Dinner & Social Time
Sunday, April 11
9:00 a.m. – Breakfast
Work on various limited projects and departure as you wish

What you should bring: Linens, pillows, towels, etc. for yourself; cleaning supplies, yard and garden tools, other misc. tools. for use in the work projects. Those who sign up to attend will be provided a more detailed list of supplies and assigned projects prior to the weekend

Projects that are planned for work weekend, April 9-11:
· Move firewood to fire circle area (everybody can work together and get it done quickly, like a human conveyor belt)
· Assemble new bunk beds for 3 new cabins (need 9 people, 3 per cabin)
· Clean out and pressure wash swimming pool (4 people)
· Clear and work on erosion problem on trail to athletic field (5-6 people)
· Stain sections of fence at entrance and new maintenance building (4 people)
· Paint Challenger cabin (4-6 people)
· Water seal walkway to dining room and Old Salem cabin (2-4 people)
· Plant trees at maintenance building (2-4 people)

These are listed roughly in order of importance. All supplies and materials will be here, participants will need gloves and work clothes.

Camp Construction

I went to camp today and saw the amazing work the Kampschroeder Construction company has done on the cabins. They are truly amazing. I talked with Keith and he said that there are many jobs for work weekend. People that can hold and paint brush are encouraged to come to work weekend!

Deaf Camp Brochure Now Available

2010 Sertoma Deaf Camp invites children ages 8-16 who are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a family member who is deaf or hard of hearing to join us in the beautiful Sauratown Mountains of North Carolina for a week of fun and adventure from June 20-25. Campers will be accepted on a first come first serve basis as long as space is available. A non-refundable deposit of $75.00 made payable to Camp Sertoma Club of NC, VA & MD is required with the initial application form. Please visit our Deaf Camp page for more information.

Walk4Hearing Update

The Sertoma Clubs of the Doug Council District received a “Thank You” from the NC-Walk4Hearing. They appreciate the hard work and time we put into the Walk. We raised $1455.00. We were an affiliate so a check for $582.00
that will go to Camp Sertoma was sent.

The next walk hopefully will be in the Spring of 2011. Be on the lookout for future information.

The national Walk4Hearing topped $1,000,000 (one million dollars)!!!
