Fun Weekend Sept. 14-16 2012

August 25th, 2012

the old hotelYou’re Invited to Fun Weekend at Camp Sertoma celebrating 31 years of partnership with N.C. 4-H September 14-16, 2012 at Sertoma 4-H Educational Center – Westfield, NC

Come and enjoy the relaxing environment and the fellowship with other Sertomans and friends as we observe the 30th anniversary year of our association with 4-H. Share your pictures of camps from way back and view the new improvements to the camp, including the newly renovated kitchen and ADA-compliant dining hall, and the new cabins. Bring the family (but leave the pets behind; sorry, pets are not allowed on state property.) And maybe think about bringing a club member from your hometown who hasn’t been exposed to Camp Sertoma yet or bring a prospective member. Here’s some activities to choose from depending upon the weather and river conditions:
Canoeing
Ropes Course
Hiking
Food, fun and games, and fellowship
Porch sitting (our favorite activity at Camp)

Bring your own towels, bed linens, snacks, sodas, and adult beverages. We’ll provide the meals starting with dinner on Friday and ending with breakfast on Sunday. We will have silent auctions, raffles, and games to raise money for camper scholarships and other needs. Bring an item to raffle or auction.

Please reply to John Kelly, johnlacy54atyahoo.com, 919-814-7848 (cell), or 1180 Holder Road, Lillington, NC 27546 if you have any questions or to sign up. Please note the names of attendees; nights lodging is needed and whether you have a preference of a cabin or a room in Cheshire Hall (the “hotel”); and meals you plan to eat. We would like to have a head count no later than September 7th so the activities, meals, and lodging can be planned accordingly.

NOTE: The Sertoma Deaf Camp Committee and the Camp Sertoma Club of NC/VA/MD will meet at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 14, to maximize the amount of fun time we’ll have to enjoy on Saturday. Interested Sertomans and non- Sertomans are invited to attend the meeting.

Deaf Camp 2012

June 23rd, 2012

group photoWow! What a week we had at camp with over 24 staff and 71 campers. I hope you have been following us on our Facebook page – Sertoma Deaf Camp. We were actively posting photos all week for parents and club members to see! A special thanks goes out to Maggie Blehm our Deaf Camp Coordinator and her helpful assistant director, Brad Hardin. Camp could not have happened without the help of our many sponsors and volunteers. During the week Sandy Waterman, Michael Hoffman, John Kelly, Jim Womble, Geneva Britt, Patsy Schutte, Nancy Voiland and Nancy from Winston-Salem all volunteered at camp. The food and programming provided by the Sertoma 4-H staff was excellent thanks to the camp’s administrative team: Robert Banks, Joel Simpson and Jade Lawrence all under the leadership of Center Director Keith Russell. Almost every cabin group camped out under the stars, cooked Hobo dinners in the firepits and ate ‘Smores. We signed many camp songs before meals and had amazing evening programs: water carnival, skit night and campfire.

Adventure camp stayed on camp property at Moores Springs Campground for several nights. This was their base camp as they canoed the Dan, rock climbed at Pilot Mountain and hiked the trails at Hanging Rock State Park with help from Camp Cheerio Adventures. The tired teens returned to Camp Sertoma on Thursday where they completed the ropes course, had a camp store break and relaxed in the pool before finally taking showers in their cabins!

Thursday evening ended camp with an awards ceremony and dance that lasted past their normal lights out time. Friday morning many parents and three Sertoma members transported campers back home: John Kelly, Geneva Britt and Vernon Royster.  I am looking forward to Deaf Camp 2013 with the renewed help of all those involved.

Yours in Service to Mankind,

Janis Henderson-Hunsucker
Camp Club Secretary

Work Weekend 2012

April 23rd, 2012

A group of dedicated folks showed up at camp Friday and Saturday to get work done. A big shout out to Ed Kampschroeder and George Bridger for coming early to install the bricks. They look beautiful!

Thanks to Our Recent Deaf Camp Sponsors

March 18th, 2012

We’ve just received notice that the Triangle Community Foundation has awarded us a grant in the amount of $5,000 for camper scholarships. Whoopee!

We’ve also received a donation in the amount of $500 from the Quota Club of Raleigh. Double whoopee! Nancy, Geneva and I attended the club’s meeting last Wednesday evening and accepted the check. We learned that the Quota Club had been a supporter of our camp in its early years and the club, on its own, decided to resume supporting the camp this year.

And, the Norfolk Sertoma Club has made a generous donation of $5,000 to our kitty. Triple whoopee! I traveled to Norfolk two weeks ago to thank the club in person for its donation.

Finally, although we’re happy for the donation of $1,500 from the Sertoma by the Bay club, (quadruple whoopee!), we’re sad the check we received will be the last one we will receive from the club as it has disbanded. It has been a stalwart supporter of the camp in years past. Some of you may still have water bottles donated by the club several years ago.

A reminder that the committee meets on Friday evening, April 20, of work weekend. Please RSVP as soon as possible. It appears we will finally be getting the bricks in the ground. The order was to have been placed early this past week for delivery by April 20.

Also, I also visited the Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf on Wednesday. The chief administrative officer says the kids who attended last summer spoke well of our camp and are planning to attend again this year. He hopes more of their students will attend this year. I left a copy of Janis’ slide show with him. I’m trusting he will share it with teachers, staff, and the kids.

Yours in Sertoma service,
John Kelly
