2013 Sertoma Deaf Camp invites children ages 8-16 who are deaf, hard of hearing, or signing CODA’s to join us in the beautiful Sauratown Mountains of Stokes County, North Carolina for a week of fun and adventure from June 16-21, 2013.  Campers will be accepted on a first come first serve basis as long as space is available. A non-refundable deposit of $75.00 made payable to Camp Sertoma Club of NC, VA & MD is required with the initial application.  If you have questions about Deaf Camp, please email SertomaDeafCamp@gmail.com. Training days:  June 14th, 15th & 16th
Camp week: June 16-21, 2013

Applicants should have skills to work with deaf, hard of hearing and hearing campers. Certified Interpreters as well as ASL 101 students are encouraged to apply. Prior experience with working with children in a camping environment will be considered. Applicants must be at least 18 and have completed high school.

Campers will be assigned to cabins by age group (4 adventurous/outdoorsy staff will be placed in adventure camp). Our ratio of counselors to campers will be 1:4 for each cabin. We are anticipating 5 cabins of boys and 5 cabins of girls and 20 campers in adventure camp. Counselors will stay in the cabins with the campers and accompany them throughout the week to all classes and activities. Signing counselors will work in conjunction with the non-signing summer staff to make the week of Deaf Camp a memorable and meaningful week for all campers.

Summer Camp Signing Staff will be paid depending on experience. Rate will include  room and board. You will be paid for the training day(s) as well as camp week.

The Camp Club has elected George Bridger and Nat McHenry foreman and they will direct us to the many different projects that need to be completed.

Proposed Projects:

• Replace benches in fire circle behind recreation hall
• Repaint rocking chairs at Cheshire Hall and Recreation Hall
• Curtain project, Vade Mecum Mavens
• Clean out/re-work flower garden beside camp store
• Paint exterior of Old Salem cabin
• Paint interior of Winston-Salem Cabin
• Pressure wash porch of Cheshire Hall, First and Second floors
• Paint porches of Chapel
• Trim/cut out trees and bushes close to cabins
• Inventory adventure camp supplies
• Benches around bell patio??? (possible fundraising opportunity)

We need presidents/president elects from each club to attend! We also encourage club members to attend as well. I’m sure your club has needs . . . getting new members, retention of old members, energizing your club, critical training, etc. . . . so, your club cannot afford to miss this convention. Get with your club members this week and find the funds to send a representative(s). Be informed, Be there!!
