Fun Weekend Sept. 14-16 2012

August 25th, 2012

the old hotelYou’re Invited to Fun Weekend at Camp Sertoma celebrating 31 years of partnership with N.C. 4-H September 14-16, 2012 at Sertoma 4-H Educational Center – Westfield, NC

Come and enjoy the relaxing environment and the fellowship with other Sertomans and friends as we observe the 30th anniversary year of our association with 4-H. Share your pictures of camps from way back and view the new improvements to the camp, including the newly renovated kitchen and ADA-compliant dining hall, and the new cabins. Bring the family (but leave the pets behind; sorry, pets are not allowed on state property.) And maybe think about bringing a club member from your hometown who hasn’t been exposed to Camp Sertoma yet or bring a prospective member. Here’s some activities to choose from depending upon the weather and river conditions:
Canoeing
Ropes Course
Hiking
Food, fun and games, and fellowship
Porch sitting (our favorite activity at Camp)

Bring your own towels, bed linens, snacks, sodas, and adult beverages. We’ll provide the meals starting with dinner on Friday and ending with breakfast on Sunday. We will have silent auctions, raffles, and games to raise money for camper scholarships and other needs. Bring an item to raffle or auction.

Please reply to John Kelly, johnlacy54atyahoo.com, 919-814-7848 (cell), or 1180 Holder Road, Lillington, NC 27546 if you have any questions or to sign up. Please note the names of attendees; nights lodging is needed and whether you have a preference of a cabin or a room in Cheshire Hall (the “hotel”); and meals you plan to eat. We would like to have a head count no later than September 7th so the activities, meals, and lodging can be planned accordingly.

NOTE: The Sertoma Deaf Camp Committee and the Camp Sertoma Club of NC/VA/MD will meet at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 14, to maximize the amount of fun time we’ll have to enjoy on Saturday. Interested Sertomans and non- Sertomans are invited to attend the meeting.

Presidential visit to camp

May 15th, 2011

Sertoma President Dennis Lawler and his wife, Judy, of Liberty, Mo. visited Camp Sertoma today. Randy Mercer, governor of the Henry C. Carter District, sponsored the event today and prepared a wonderful lunch (see photos below). Keith Russell was joined by several Winston-Salem Sertom Club, Camp Sertoma Club, Raleigh Sertoma Club and Alamance County Sertoma Club members and other guests. The weather was fair and didn’t start drizzling until we were under the gym porch eating lunch. Keith Russell showed us all the newly renovated dining hall, kitchen, Cheshire Hall’s lobby, the chapel, the 2 classrooms and the 3 cabin circles. Afterward, committee chair John Kelly drove them to see the horse barn and riding ring, the Doug Council High Adventure course, and the campground. President Lawler and Judy were very complimentary of the camp and its facilities. A very successful event!

Work Weekend 2011 – Almost Blown Away!

April 22nd, 2011

Over 30 people came to the Camp Club and Camp Committee meeting on Friday night led by John Kelly and Nancy Voiland and then worked most of the day on Saturday.
Aaron Kimball and Nick DeSerres organized the left hand storage room in the gym while Janis Henderson-Hunsucker (me) and Stacy Buck cleaned benches, stacked chairs and moved tables. The McHenry/Kimball ladies cleaned the camp store and many nice fellows like George Bridger helped move the old gym doors into the camp store and stack heavy folding tables. Nat McHenry headed up a crew at the chapel cleaning that building. The DeSerres/Council women organized 206 that held extra boxes of kitchen supplies and toilet paper. You can actually walk in the room without boxes falling on you now! Linda Love made a trip to the Dollar Store to buy shower curtains for all the cabins. Nancy Voiland, Geneva Britt and Patsy Schutte cleaned the cabin boxes and trash cans. The DeSerres ladies helped me restock them and Steve Olsen helped me put them back in the cabins. Todd Kampschroder and friends cut down a tree that was blocking the path to the fire circle. We found a possum in a trashcan and released it into the wild.
Needless to say, much cleaning and organizing was completed in one day at camp dispite the very heavy winds! We weren’t blown away and the camp received a good spring cleaning.

Deaf Camp A Success!

August 14th, 2010

Ninety-two happy campers enjoyed a great week of fun, outdoor activities, crafts and visiting Hanging Rock State Park. Kudos go to summer program director Robert Banks and 4-H for planning an excellent program for the campers. A big thank you to Michael Hoffman for his six years of dedication and service as deaf camp program coordinator.

None of this would have been possible without the continued support of the Sertoma Clubs in North Carolina, Virginia and Maryland. Be on the lookout for pictures from camp and a video showing all the fun the campers enjoyed.

Work Weekend 2010

April 11th, 2010

We had a great work weekend. There was a small group of dedicated folks and lots of work was accomplished. A team led by Ed Bridger and George Kampscroeder put the bunkbeds together in 3 cabins. The 4-H staff: Rob, Jared, Rodney & Susan delivered the mattresses. Don Welch single handedly powerwashed the entire pool. He says he wants to share the job next year! Nancy Voiland, John Kelly and Janis Henderson-Hunsucker removed the leaves out of the pool and used the leaf blower and rakes to remove the leaves from the pool deck. The 4-H staff and John Kelly painted the fence by the gate and maintanence shed. Lisa Lloyd and crew cooked great meals because we sure worked up an appetite! Mike Bowman (property mananger) and Keith Russell (Center Director) provided us with directions and tools.
